אִילָן שֶׁנֶּעֱקַר וְנִשְׁתַּיֵּר בּוֹ שֹׁרֶשׁ, פָּטוּר. וְכַמָּה יְהֵא הַשֹּׁרֶשׁ, רַבָּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר מִשּׁוּם רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן יְהוּדָה אִישׁ בַּרְתּוֹתָא, כְּמַחַט שֶׁל מִתּוּן:

ונשתייר בו שורש. מחובר לקרקע שלא נעקר:
כמחט של מתוח. גרסינן, כלומר שיעור עובי השורש כמחט שהאורגים מותחים בו הבגד, אחר שארגוהו, להפשיטו ולהרחיבו:

אילן שנעקר. פירוש שנעקר מהעפר שסביביו ונשתייר שורש ממנו שלא נעקר ממנו העפר שסביב אותו השרש:
כמחט של מיתוח. פי' הר"ב כמחט שהאורגים מותחי' בו וכו'. וזה ל' הערוך ערך מתח. האורגים יש להן עץ ארוך ברוחב היריעה ובראשיו שני מחטין שבורין ונועצים ברוחב היריעה מכאן ומכאן כדי למושכה ולמותחה ומכלי אורגים הוא:
