Mishnayot in memory of the deceased

It is customary to learn Mishnayot in memory of the deceased: the word משנה is made of the same letters as נשמה, the soul. Write the name in Hebrew and choose your custom: the page shows the Mishnayot to learn.

Where do these customs come from?

  • One mishnah per letter: you learn a mishnah that begins with each letter of the name, then the Mishnayot of נשמה. This custom is brought in Gesher HaChaim. Any mishnah that begins with the letter is fine, not only the start of a chapter. The page first offers short Mishnayot; “Another mishnah” shows a different one.
  • One chapter per letter: a custom found especially in Chabad, which follows a list of 22 chapters, one per letter of the alphabet. If a letter appears twice in the name, the page offers another chapter that begins with the same letter.
  • Name alone, or with the father or mother: most learn according to the name alone; according to Rav Binyamin Bamberger, one follows the name of the deceased only. Some add “בן” or “בת” and the father's or mother's name: choose according to your custom.
  • נשמה: Mishnayot 4 to 7 of chapter 7 of Mikvaot begin with נ, ש, מ and ה, the letters of נשמה. They are learnt after those of the name.
  • When? According to Divrei Soferim (laws of mourning), choosing Mishnayot by letters is mainly done on the yahrzeit; during the year of mourning, you learn the Mishnayot of your choice.
  • After the learning: El Malei Rachamim is said by Ashkenazim and Chassidim (text of Siddur Sefard, Torat Emet edition). The Hashkavah is said by Sephardim and Mizrachim (text of Siddur Edot HaMizrach). In El Malei Rachamim, “בַּעֲבוּר (שפלוני) נָדַב לִצְדָקָה” names the person who gives tzedakah in their memory.
