שָׁאֲלוּ אֶת הַזְּקֵנִים בְּרוֹמִי, אִם אֵין רְצוֹנוֹ בַּעֲבוֹדָה זָרָה, לָמָה אֵינוֹ מְבַטְּלָהּ. אָמְרוּ לָהֶן, אִלּוּ לְדָבָר שֶׁאֵין צֹרֶךְ לָעוֹלָם בּוֹ הָיוּ עוֹבְדִין, הָיָה מְבַטְּלוֹ. הֲרֵי הֵן עוֹבְדִין לַחַמָּה וְלַלְּבָנָה וְלַכּוֹכָבִים וְלַמַּזָּלוֹת. יְאַבֵּד עוֹלָמוֹ מִפְּנֵי הַשּׁוֹטִים. אָמְרוּ לָהֶן, אִם כֵּן, יְאַבֵּד דָּבָר שֶׁאֵין צֹרֶךְ לָעוֹלָם בּוֹ וְיַנִּיחַ דָּבָר שֶׁצֹּרֶךְ הָעוֹלָם בּוֹ. אָמְרוּ לָהֶן, אַף אָנוּ מַחֲזִיקִין יְדֵי עוֹבְדֵיהֶם שֶׁל אֵלּוּ, שֶׁאוֹמְרִים, תֵּדְעוּ שֶׁהֵן אֱלוֹהוֹת, שֶׁהֲרֵי הֵן לֹא בָטָלוּ:

שאלו את הזקנים ברומי. כלומר דבר זה נשאל לחכמי ישראל ברומי. הר"ן:
יאבד עולמו מפני השוטים. וא"ת יושיבום. יאבד השוטים. לא קשיא שהרי מצינו שאובדים במלאת ספקם וסאתם כענין יושבי הארץ ארץ כנען וכמו שהם קודם לכן לא נאבדו כמו שנאמר (בראשית ט״ו:ט״ז) כי לא שלם עון האמורי. כמו כן אלו השוטים כשיתמלא סאתם יאבדו. וקודם לכן לא. שאם יאבדם קודם לכן הרי זהו בכלל יאבד עולמו. לפי שהעולם נברא שתהא הרשות נתונה בידי אדם להימין או להשמאיל. ולפיכך אין לאבדם קודם שנתמלא סאתם. נראה לי. וראיתי בספר דרך חיים על משנה הכל צפוי והרשות נתונה וכו' פרק שלישי דאבות שפירש שאם יאבד העובדים לא היה האדם בעל בחירה שהרי ירא מן האבוד לגמרי. ע"כ:

They asked the elders in Rome, “If [your God] has no desire for idolatry, why does he not abolish it?” They replied, “If it was something unnecessary to the world that was worshipped, he would abolish it; but people worship the sun, moon, stars and planets; should he destroy his universe on account of fools!” They said [to the elders], “If so, he should destroy what is unnecessary for the world and leave what is necessary for the world!” They replied, “[If he did that], we should merely be strengthening the hands of the worshippers of these, because they would say, “know that these are deities, for behold they have not been abolished!”
