הֵחֵלּוּ מַעֲלִין בָּאֵפֶר עַל גַּבֵּי הַתַּפּוּחַ. וְתַפּוּחַ הָיָה בְאֶמְצַע הַמִּזְבֵּחַ, פְּעָמִים עָלָיו כִּשְׁלשׁ מֵאוֹת כּוֹר. וּבָרְגָלִים לֹא הָיוּ מְדַשְּׁנִין אוֹתוֹ, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא נוֹי לַמִּזְבֵּחַ. מִיָּמָיו לֹא נִתְעַצֵּל הַכֹּהֵן מִלְּהוֹצִיא אֶת הַדָּשֶׁן:

החלו מעלין באפר. לאחר שסלקו לצדדים או לסובב אברים ופדרים שלא נתאכלו, היו מושכין את האפר במגרפות שבידם ומעלין אותו לתפוח, כמין כרי גדול של אפר שהיה באמצע המזבח צבור ועשוי כתפוח:
פעמים עליו כשלש מאות כור. גוזמא קתני, ידמעולם לא הניחו להיות עליו שלש מאות כור:
וברגלים לא היו מדשנים אותו. לא היו מוציאין את הדשן לחוץ אע״פ שהוא רבה על המזבח:
מפני שהוא נוי למזבח. שיהיה נראה שקרבנות הרבה היו על גבי המזבח:
מימיו לא נתעצל. כלומר מה שהיה דשן כל כך, לא מחמת עצלות הכהנים, אלא לנוי להראות שקרבנות הרבה קרבו על גבי המזבח:

החלו. התחילו. המפרש.
פעמים עליו כג' מאות כור. כתב הר"ב גוזמא קתני. ופי' גוזמא כתבתי במ"ב פרק ג' דנדרים. וכתב הרמב"ם ואח"כ גורפין מהכרי ההוא ומוציאין אל שפך הדשן. עד שמבערים האפר מן המזבח והוא הנקרא דשון המזבח על האמת זולתי במועדים וכו' ע"כ:
מימיו לא נתעצל הכהן כו'. מי שמוטל עליו לעשות. כ"כ המפרש. והרמב"ם בספ"ב מהלכות תמידין כתב גורפין מן הערימה בפסכתר והוא כלי גדול שמחזיק לתך [עיין במשנה ה' פ"ה] ומורידין אותו למטה וברגלים לא היו וכו'. וכל [מי] שירצה מן הכהנים ממלא מן הדשן שהורידו למטה ומוציא חוץ לעיר לשפך הדשן ואין להוצאת הדשן לחוץ פייס אלא כל הרוצה. ומעולם לא נתעצל כהן מלהוציא את הדשן.

They then began to throw the ashes on to the heap (tapuah). This heap was in the middle of the altar, and sometimes there was as much as three hundred kor on it. On festivals they did not use to clear away the ash because it was reckoned an ornament to the altar. It never happened that the priest was neglectful in taking out the ashes.
